Story of the wine:
Whilst wine making in the Rioja region of northern Spain goes back many centuries it was in the 19th century that it revived due to the influx of French and in particular Bordeaux wine makers fleeing the phylloxera epidemic that devasted their vineyards. There are several styles of Rioja, from the basic Tinto to the prestigious Gran Reservas. Rioja reserva is aged for at least three years, of which at least one year is in oak. Bodegas de Familia Burgo Viejo is a collaboration of six families that established the winery in 1987 based in Alfaro at the eastern end of Rioja Baja.
