Story of the wine:
Most grapes grown in the upper Douro valley, until the 1980s were used for Port. Since the 1990s there has been a revolution in the valley and many great red and white non fortified wines are being produced. The Duorum estate, started in 2007 and named after the two men, old friends, people who established the winery, Maria Soares Franco – who was for many years in charge of the iconic Douro wine Barca Velha – and Joao Portugal Ramos. The wines are also a blend of two altitudes, and from two different vineyard parcels. Colheita comes from the verb ‘colher’, to collect or harvest. It has historically been applied to ports of a single vintage year that are left in barrel forever to go tawny. These days it is increasingly being used for the standard red wine from any Douro estate, to distinguish it from reserve wine, or any sub / under brand. Generally it will be oaked to at least some degree.
